Greg Chitwood

UNITED STATES

The USA artist has explored memory, space and time in works made across the UAE. In July 1st, his first full UAE survey opened in Abu Dhabi as part of the 3rd Group Exhibition «Mixture» at Art Hub at the Mall at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi.
Born in the United States in 1958, he has been residing in the UAE for the last year.  His creative interests vary quite a bit including woodworking, wood carving, pencil, colored pencil, pastels, and acrylic painting.  The pieces he has created while here are mainly watercolor, pencil and acrylic paint since his wood related tools do not travel well.
«I am not young I only began drawing and painting a few years ago.  I have always had a passion for woodworking and as I began creating unique furniture pieces I found a need for hand carving wood pieces.  Acting on a friends advice I joined his carving club and I discovered that while I enjoyed learning about carving what I really enjoyed was visiting with other artists sharing the same interest.  I soon after joined the local art league and started working with pencil and colored pencil.  The last couple of years I finally overcame my intimidation with paint and started working in acrylics.
I find my biggest challenge is to "get out of the box".  I tend to gravitate to representing things as they are and I struggle with being more abstract in my work.  I hope you enjoy my pieces.  While I do enjoy the creative process my real satisfaction is when someone looks at a piece and finds an interest in it».

Graciela Noemi Ghirardosi

NAILS and SAND: PAINTING HORSES

About Nails and Sand
“Nails and Sand” is an art project involving the use of sand and horseshoe nails. Focused on the head and the backbone of the horse, the intention is to put the animal’s intelligence and passion (head) and its power and support (backbone) at the center of the scene.
“The texture is an important part of my work, as it gives the objects a unique prominence. Regarding that, in this new project the aim was to introduce elements from my new environment and horse’s environment in the paintings. In that sense, the use of sand from UAE dunes bestows not only texture but also a connection with the roots of this project, born in the United Arab Emirates. With the same purpose, the seven horseshoe nails in the mane of every horse represent the seven cervical vertebrae that compose the skeleton of the neck and the seven Emirates that constitute this country”.  Graciela Noemi Ghirardosi

Graciela Noemi Ghirardosi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 4th, 1975.  Her father, an amateur painter, got her interested in painting at a very early age. When she was 6 years old she started taking classes with a private teacher, Elia Dighero, and taking exams at a small Art Academy called “Rosa Asplanato” in Buenos Aires.

When she finished high school, despite her interest in painting she did not register at the National Academy of Arts.  Instead, she decided to pursue a career in science and enrolled in the Veterinary Faculty at Buenos Aires University, where she graduated as a Veterinarian in 2000.  During the years she was at University she continued painting and taking classes and she took part in some small exhibitions in her community.
After graduating she worked in the veterinary field for many years developing a strong passion for horses although she could not reflect it in her painting, focused more in landscaping and in refining her technique.
In 2009 she moved to Abu Dhabi to take a job in a horse stable alongside her husband.  But after giving birth to her first child she stopped working for the stables in 2011. Now a mother of two children, and having left aside her veterinary job, she has decided to take a different turn in her painting career.  Focused in the magnificent animal the horse has become for her, in her most recent project “Nails and Sand” she introduced elements from her new environment into her work, such as sand from Abu Dhabi dunes and horseshoe nails: 7 horseshoe nails in the mane of each horse, as a symbolism of the seven cervical vertebrae that compose the skeleton of the neck and the seven Emirates that constitute the country which is home of this project.
